Is Self-Serve the right fit?

Self-Serve is right for you if…

  • You and your partner agree on the basics
  • Your finances are reasonably straightforward (W-2 income, savings, maybe a home, retirement accounts)
  • You're comfortable making decisions together without a lawyer in the room
  • You want to move fast…wedding's coming, and you want this handled
  • $649 fits your budget better than a $5,000 or more retainer

Consider Lawyer Review if…

  • You want each partner to have their own attorney walk through the agreement
  • You own a business, have complex financial assets, or significant pre-marital wealth
  • Either of you has been married before, has children from a prior relationship, or has complex inheritance
  • You need to address immigration provisions (Form I-864 waiver)
  • You’re in California or Florida and want to address spousal support⁴

⁴ Self-Serve doesn't permit alimony waivers in CA, NM and FL because partners are unrepresented. Lawyer Review handles this.

Self-Serve questions, answered

Is a Self-Serve prenup actually legally binding?

Yes. Every First Self-Serve prenup is state-specific, drafted on a foundation built with family law attorneys, and notarized, meeting the legal requirements for enforceability in your state. Once signed, it becomes legally binding the day you marry.

Is this a template, or is it actually customized to me?

It's actually customized. The guided questionnaire walks you and your partner through your specific assets, debts, family situation, and the agreements you want to make. Your final prenup is generated from your answers, not pulled from a generic template, and structured for your state's legal requirements.

How long does it take?

Most couples complete Self-Serve in days, not months. The guided questionnaire takes 1–3 sittings depending on your situation. Once both partners are done, your agreement is generated immediately and you can notarize the same day.

What if my partner and I are in different states or cities?

No problem. Both of you sign in from any device, anywhere. The questionnaire, document review, and online notarization all work remotely.

Why is this so much cheaper than a lawyer?

Traditional prenups bill by the hour for drafting, revisions, and consultations, and often require retainers. We've built the drafting and review workflow into software so you're paying for the agreement, not the hours.

What if I get stuck or have questions during the process?

Our team is here to help via email and chat. If you'd rather talk things through with someone first, you can book a free consultation before you start.

What states is Self-Serve available in?

First proudly serves 46 states across the United States, plus Washington, D.C.

We’re currently available in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

What's NOT included that's in Lawyer Review?

Self-Serve doesn't include attorney consultations, the ability to edit the underlying document language, immigration support provisions, or attorney advisement letters. If you need any of those, or have more complex situations to navigate, Lawyer Review is the right tier.

Is the notarization really included?

Yes, all First online prenups include online notarization in every state where remote online notarization is legally accepted. If your state requires in-person notarization (like Louisiana), we'll deliver your final agreement to take to a local notary.

What happens if we change our minds during the process?

Both partners need to agree to every provision. If you decide a Self-Serve approach isn't right after starting, our team can help you upgrade to Lawyer Review.

Should we get a prenup if we don't have many assets?

Even without significant assets today, a prenup protects future-you. It's also one of the most useful tools for couples to align on money (debt, savings habits, financial goals) before marriage. The questions are valuable even if your finances feel simple.
